Johannes Faber was born in Munich in 1952 and studied trumpet and composition in Munich, Graz, and Boston. He worked in Erwin Lehn's Südfunk Dance Orchestra Stuttgart (1980-90) and in the NDR Big Band (1990-96), both as a solo trumpeter and as a composer and arranger.
Johannes Faber composed the film score for "Rallye Paris-Dakar" and founded the rock-jazz group CONSORTIUM with Billy Cobham on drums, Christof Lauer on saxophone, Joerg Reiter on piano, and Dave King on bass. He also held a professorship at the Hamburg University of Music and Theatre.
The trumpeter played with, among others, Chaka Khan, Anthony Jackson, George Adams, Charlie Mariano, Dado Moroni, Konstantin Wecker, the UNITED JAZZ & ROCK ENSEMBLE and Peter Herbolzheimer's RHYTHM COMBINATION AND BRASS, composed for Michael Ende and was awarded the Baden-Württemberg Jazz Prize (1985).
He has performed at major jazz festivals, including the Berlin Jazz Festival, the Montreux Jazz Festival and the German Jazz Festival in Frankfurt.
In 1998, he composed the music for the poacher melodrama HIAS and played the lead role in a production at the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz (Munich). From 2000 to 2012, he conceived and hosted the highly successful "Jazz im Gärtnerplatz" series and sang and acted the Speaker (Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz) and Sarastro (Opernfestspiele Gut Immling) in Mozart's opera THE MAGIC FLUTE. In 2003, he composed the music for "4 – A Dance Event," which was successfully performed by the Munich Ballet Theatre and the orchestra, with choreography by Philip Taylor, and is part of the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz's repertoire.
From 2006 to 2012 he taught at the Conservatorio Nicolo Paganini in Genoa.
In 2012, he began his collaboration with the Mesconia Quartet, the Johannes Faber Quartet, his Italian trio Trilenzio and the also Italian rock trio Mama Suya (Mexican Standoff/INRI Records 2014).
